T4 (Levothyroxine): The Inefficient Thyroid Hormone for Fat Loss

Taking large amounts of T4 during a contest prep doesn't guarantee more fat-burning T3. Instead, you can end up with a suppressed metabolism and high levels of useless rT3. You are flooring the accelerator of a car that has its own intelligent braking system.

When comparing the two for physique purposes, T3 is the clear winner for its predictability and direct action.

The modern approach of using a low, "replacement" dose of 12.5-25 mcg of T3 is effective because it's a direct and precise way to counteract the diet-induced metabolic slowdown. Using T4 for the same purpose is like trying to perform surgery with a hammer instead of a scalpel—you have no precise control over the outcome.

Side Effects & Risks

If enough T4 does manage to convert into T3, the user will experience all the same side effects, including muscle loss and cardiac strain. However, the primary risk with T4 is its inefficiency and unpredictability. You are introducing a compound that will shut down your natural thyroid production without a reliable guarantee of providing a fat-loss benefit in return, especially when you need it most. The long half-life also means that if side effects do occur, it will take much longer for the compound to clear your system.
